Standridge Clinic Weight Loss Notice
At any moment in the United States 50% to 60% of the population is actively dieting. This is the latest statistics released. So lets talk about the law of losing weight –
*You must burn more calories than you take in, how can you accomplish this?
As we age we are fighting several factors. A Slow Metabolic Rate – check resting axillary temps on awakening, which should be in the 97.8-98.2 range. If off more than 0.5 degree, suspect possible thyroid dysfunction. Evaluate adrenal function – the stressed out adrenals with cortisol imbalance may be the real culprit by interfering with T3 activity at the cellular level, even if thyroid profiles are normal.
We must take measures to exercise on a regular basis, as with any “Diet”, unless we exercise with it we lose lean muscle mass, which is the furnace where we burn calories and our resting metabolic rate will gradually decline.
After age 20 our metabolism decreases at .05% a year, mostly due to losing 5-10 pounds of muscle tissue every decade. This means at age 30 we burn 5% fewer calories, 10% fewer at age 40, in other words 5% a decade. So what are our options, cut our food intake as we age or pick up the exercise habits or even both. Below is a chart that shows the change in metabolic rate & weight gain with age.

Slow down when you eat.By eating too quickly it diminishes hormones that tell you when you are full (satiety), which can lead to overeating. The article from J Clin Endocrinol by Kokkinos A, et al entitled “Eating Slowly increases the postprandial response of the anorexigenic gut hormones, peptide YY and Glucagon like peptide 1” suggests that your rate of eating effects gut hormones.
In summary –
- Burn more calories than you consume
- Balance your endocrine system – take the load off the pancreas/adrenal. Estrogen/Progesterone need balanced, as well as the androgens (Testosterone/DHEA) for anabolic muscle growth, along with cortisol levels
- Eat plenty of low glycemic foods and if needed protein type snacks to protect your blood sugar levels and cortisol throughout the day and night
- Get regular cardiovascular and resistance training
